MODx blog tool allows custom tags field; future plans

03 Sep 2009 MODx, internet

The latest version of pkBlog (v1.1.1b) has an extra parameter so you can name your own tagging template variable - useful if you have two pages using the snippet. pkBlog will come to rest at this point for a while, except for bug-fixes, while other aspects of the broader PubKit snippets are developed.

I think that the snippet is now developed enough for other people to try it out and adapt it to their needs. There's probably more to be done on the structure of sites using the snippet than there is to the snippet itself, though of course more functionality and parameterization is always possible.

I'll be moving on to a sister snippet called pkEvents now, also derived from my prototype PubKit front-end document manager. pkEvents will share a great deal of code with pkBlog, adding TV-based fields for times and other fields suitable for posting lists of upcoming events, with contact details, links and descriptions.

Once pkEvents is running smoothly, I expect to be fusing it with pkBlog and producing the first version of PubKit, which will have some kind of parameters to enable it to generate blog items, event calendars, news items, sidebar posts and other features without having to update the PHP code.

Following that will come the other face of PubKit, the creation and management of items using custom database tables, for things such as membership lists, with many custom fields and no significant text elements.
