Pogwatch blog now has comments

19 Jul 2009 MODx, internet

Blog items on Pogwatch now feature comments, so you can add your remarks to items or see what others think about the topics presented.

For now, there's no requirement to log in to add a comment, but there is a "captcha" security field to keep the spam down. Personally, I hate those things. My eyesight's not too good, and I often get them wrong. The whispers from a busy railway station that some sites offer as an alternative are even worse. But it will have to do until I get better acquainted with the Jot snippet which powers the comments. Then I can apply less obtrusive techniques that I use on feedback forms elsewhere.

Installing Jot has been an interesting experience from many angles. As with Ditto, I've run into conundrums concerning caching and PHx, and I've made some compromises with coding style for the sake of getting it up and running quickly. I hope I can find the time to have a good look at it and add to the documentation on the Wiki to help others install it without too much hassle.

Now not only has comments, but they should work! Thanks to Kongondo for message after his attempt to comment failed. It's because of a caching problem - like pagination with Ditto, it can be fiddly when you use the full PHx plugin. These blog posts use a template with an uncached call to the Jot snippet, but the document itself must be uncacheable for entry of comments to work. I thought I had fixed that in the PubKit snippet that creates the posts. Maybe I didn't transfer it from my local setup to the live environment. Tsk tsk, must test, test and test again in future!

I've just used it on a new site and it's very slick :-)

keep up the good work
